It’s been nearly five years since the Portland Red Cross announced the expansion of its volunteer opportunities.
That’s when the organization launched its Red Cross of Maine, which is now accepting volunteers from all over the state, and across the country.
Now, the organization is adding another one: the Volunteer Opportunities of Maine.
The expansion of the Volunteer Opportunity of Maine program will give more than 100,000 volunteers access to more than 20,000 opportunities throughout Maine, including more than 200 jobs opportunities.
“This program expands our ability to recruit and train volunteers, and to expand the opportunities we offer across the state,” said Mary Matson, executive director of the Red Cross.
“Our volunteers can now connect with others across the community and help to make the world a better place for those in need.”
The expansion is one of the largest of its kind in the United States, and it will add more than 10,000 new opportunities across the board, including a variety of career-focused jobs.
The Red Cross is also partnering with employers and organizations to offer the most accessible work opportunities.
For example, the Red Hook Fire Department is opening a career opportunity that offers opportunities to work in firefighting, health care, human services, education and community development.
There is also an opportunity to work on projects with a range of nonprofits and social enterprises.
“The expansion will enable us to offer more opportunities for our community members, especially the many people who have been in the fire service for decades,” said Portland Fire Commissioner Mike Gulland.
“It’s important that we have a diverse workforce, and we know that when we expand opportunities, our community will benefit.”
The Red Cross has been working with the Maine Department of Workforce Development and the Maine State Police to help establish the new opportunities.
For more information on the expansion and to sign up for a job, visit the RedCross of Maine website or call the office at 787-564-0252.
The Red Hook fire service was created in 1968 and is a part of the City of Portland.
The city and fire departments work together to provide safe and effective services to all of the community’s residents.
